The Taiga School at the Tiuitiakha River

The family portrayed in Stephan Dudeck’s film lives in a community of eastern Khanty and Forest Nenets reindeer herders whose cultures have had a strong mutual influence. Many young people have given up speaking their mother tongue in favor of Russian. The film offers views of the community’s daily life and how their indigenous knowledge is transmitted to younger generations in a school they have established themselves.
